Jay-Z – Criminology Freestyle (Unreleased)

Shouts to Nah Right. Below is the description. #CLASSIC

What can I say, this is a historic moment in Hip Hop. At the time I knew of Jay-z from Original Flavor and he had a cameo on this Big Daddy Kane song that was out that summer.

This was before Rocafella, this was best friends Jay and Dame driving down to Philly in twin Lexus GS Coupes with records in the trunk. This was one of Jay-z first interviews outside of New York. You could see the potential in him, he was nervous yet confident. During this interview he talks about life before Reasonable Doubt which didn’t come out until 10 months later. Check out the freestyle over some Wu beats.

He touched on a number of topics including how he got his name, facing early industry obstacles, wanting to work with 2 Pac, and how his hustle has changed in the music biz. He even speaks on one of his greatest memories of recording "Illmatic". We were also able to talk with some fellow artists who have shared successful relationships with Large, including Neek The Exotic, J Love, Lord Finesse and Cormega. It was definitely an honor and a pleasure to build with one of the greatest producers Hip Hop as ever seen. We captured so much that we had to break this piece in 2 parts. LORD FINESSE - ULTIMATE BREAKS & BEATS TOUR 2/24/10 @ BB KINGS NYC

Shouts to my man Lord Finesse. Below is a little background on this event:

On February 24, 2010 New York celebrated a major cornerstone in hip-hop history with the Ultimate Breaks and Beats Live to commemorate the original release of the Ultimate Breaks and Beats compilation (1981-1991) and its creators, the late Breakbeat Lenny Roberts and Louis Break Beat Lou Flores. The event will showcase some of the most talented DJs in New York City that will display their extraordinary turntablist skills as they pay tribute the music collection that transformed the face of hip-hop for over three decades. The historic night will take place at B.B. Kings with doors opening at 6:00 PM and the show beginning at 8:00 PM and will also serve as a launch party for the upcoming Ultimate Breaks and Beats national tour.

The Ultimate Breaks and Beats compilation played a pivotal role in shaping hip-hop by providing DJs with the essential tools they needed to create many of the popular party anthems of the era, legendary mixes, and ultimately the foundation of early hip-hops infamous eclectic sound. The 25 volume compilation was co-created by the late Breakbeat Lenny and Break Beat Lou who released the collection over a span of 10 years (1981-1991) as hip-hop was just beginning to take shape.

The compilation conveniently extracted drum breaks from hit rock, disco, and funk songs and created entire songs worth of what would become the most sought after beats providing a critical library for DJs and producers. This style become integral to every aspect of hip-hop from the DJ to the B-boys and B-girls to the MCs who rapped over the signature sounds, and now the hip-hop community will gather to pay respect in true hip-hop fashion.

This night is a special moment for a lot of people not just me, says Luis Flores This is just another dope party; its the night when the DJ Worlds elite honor the foundation of present day hip-hop. A list of hip-hops whose who will be on hand to give riveting first hand examples of classic break beat turntabilism as they recognize Break Beat Lou and Breakbeat Lenny for their monumental contributions to what has become one of the largest global music genres ever, hip-hop.

Bastards Of The Party (2006) - Documentary about the Bloods & Crips

Shouts to Doo Wop for reminding me about this documentary. Below is the description.

Bastards of the Party is a 2006 documentary film produced by Antoine Fuqua and directed by former Bloods gang-member Cle Sloan. The film explores the creation of two of Los Angeles's most notorious gangs, the Crips and the Bloods, from the perspective of the Los Angeles community. The film also denounces gang violence and tries to present meaningful solutions from former gang-members to stop this problem. Bastards of the Party begins to explore the history of African-American gangs in Los Angeles all the way back to the black migration from the south in order to escape In the 1970s the movement and the people began to change. There was a larger push towards individuality and freedom and less of a push towards self sacrifice. This attitude is illustrated in the movie Superfly, where the main character is out for himself. In this atmosphere, Raymond Washington created the concept of a gang of the new generation of youth that went from "the cradle to the grave" and was joined by Stanley "Tookie" Williams and Jamel Barnes in the formation of the Crips. The title of the movie, Bastards of the Party comes from a passage in City of Quartz that reads: "As even The [Los Angeles] Times recognized, the decimation of the Panthers led directly to a recrudescence of gangs in the early 1970s. 'Crippin,' the most extraordinary new gang phenomenon was a bastard offspring of the Panthers' former charisma, filling the void left by the LAPD SWAT teams."
