RIP TRACY 168 : GRAFF LEGEND

RIP to the legend Tracy 168....Below is some info on him and his graf career.

Michael Tracy, AKA TRACY168, one of the original creators of the art form called "graffiti," studied at the institute of Higher Learning, better known as the Lexington I.R.T. His canvas was the subway car and his pallet various cans of spray paint. TRACY 168 ® - A Train "The best year for graffiti was 1973," he ruminates. "Styles were coming out. We got into this thing with colors. First it was two colors, then three colors, then four. What makes me a powerful artist, " he states, " is that my paintings are alive, strong and very bright. The color combos make it. Balance: each color as strong as it is enhances the color beside it, going back and forth.

Giving style and balance and movement, that is what makes a good artist." "After the colors," TRACY 168 continues, "the challenge became who could do the biggest piece, the wildest. Then it was top-to-bottom, whole car, whole train. We worked on clouds and flames. We got into lettering. Everybody was trying to develop their own technique. When I would go into a yard (train), the first thing I would do is look around and see who was good. That would be my objective. To burn the best writer in the yard, and I wouldn't leave until I did something better than him." Because of these types of beginnings, most street graffiti was based on the macho culture of competition. How long will you take to do a car before you get caught? How big can you write your name? It was fueled by a rage against a society which didn't care about its kids. It was a form of communication and a way to gain recognition outside of community. It was perceived as the only way to escape the ghetto, and to become known and recognized in faraway places, like Brooklyn.

Eventually, TRACY 168 became bored by spray painting trains as he felt he had no competition. He turned to painting wall murals in 1978 and his first paid assignment was the side of French Charlys Bar on Webster Avenue in the Bronx. Regarding memorial walls for victims of urban violence, for which he is "artist of record" on many, he knows it is only a matter of time before there is another mural to be painted and another mother crying. "Like they said in the bible," he was recently quoted, "The dead will walk the earth. Sometimes I wonder if it started happening. The buildings are starting to look like tombs, and the people on crack are the walking dead." His murals quickly became recognized for their individuality because of his need to give back to the community. He would ask people for their ideas and he would plan his mural so that it would have some message of guidance. For the kids, a positive message - no violence, no drugs. http://www.bronxmall.com/tracy168/past.html

Rammellzee - Live at Antenna Club UK (1982) (AUDIO)

RIP RAMMELZEE

(VIDEO) RARE NYC BREAKDANCE BATTLE 1984

Some very classic footage......

NEW YORK CITY BREAKERS 1983 SYNDICATED MAGAZINE TV SHOW (VIDEO)

The New York City Breakers (NYCB) is a breakdancing crew and hip-hop group that was established in the Bronx borough of New York City. They were originally known as the "Floormaster Crew". Chino "Action" Lopez,Noel "Kid Nice" Mangu,Matthew "Glide Master" Caban,Tony "Powerful Pexster" Lopez,Ray "Lil Lep" Ramos,Bobby "Flip Rock" Potts,Tony "Mr. Wave" Draughon,Corey "Icey Ice" Montalvo Michael Holman, Hip Hop pioneer and Downtown artist/filmmaker who produce and directed the first Hip Hop film, "Catch Beat" in 1981, promoted the first Hip-Hop parties in Downtown Manhattan at a night club called "Negril." At a NYC Bow Wow Wow concert in September, 1982, Bow Wow Wow's manager and legendary impresario, Malcolm McLaren, hired Holman to put together a Hip Hop Review - consisting of DJ Afrika Bambaataa, DJ Jazzy Jay, MC Ikey C, graffiti artist Kel-1 and the Rock Steady Crew - to open for Bow Wow Wow. A few months later, Holman brought his Hip Hop Review to Negril, an East Village club on 2nd Ave. and 12th Street, as a way of introducing this new sub-culture to the Art World of Downtown New York City. On the opening night, Holman had Bambaataa and Jazzy Jay rock the dance floor, and featured the graffiti art of Rammellzee. Holman's close friend, legendary graffiti artist/pioneer Phase II created the flyers for these Hip Hop nights. Holman also screened "Catch A Beat" for background visual entertainment. The featured breakdancers/B-Boys, and the true highlight of the night, were the Rock Steady Crew, whom Holman had acted as manager/agent for a year or so at that point. Wanting to see a real B-Boy battle, played out for a Downtown audience - something even Holman hadn't witnessed yet - Holman asked Crazy Legs, Rock Steady's leader, to find and invite another B-Boy crew to Negril for a real throwdown. Crazy Legs decided to invite the Floor Masters, a crew they had battled a few weeks before, at a hostile Jam in a High School in the Bronx. Ironically, the two battling crews had to join together, to fight their way out of the Jam when the crowd turned against both of them. This incident created a lasting friendship and respect between these dance crews. During the Negril Floormasters/RSC Battle, Holman was amazed by the newcomers' dancing abilities. Where the Rock Steady Crew dazzled the crowd with their dancing and rhythm, The Floor Masters wowed everyone, especially Holman, with their speed and power and athleticism. Inspired, Holman decided to create a new, all-star, super B-Boy crew, that specialized in power and speed, and build the crew with The Floor Masters as the foundation, and it was Phase II, with his genius for words, who came up with the name, The New York City Breakers. The NYC Breakers started their careers' with a splash, appearing, not days after signing with Holman, on the nationally televised Merv Griffin Show. Soon after, the NYCBs began appearing on everything from "Soul Train", "Ripley's Believe It or Not!", "P.M. Magazine", "CBS Evening News", "Good Morning America", "Amnesty International Gala", "That's Incredible!", and "NBC's Salute to the Olympics" just to name a few."Sixteen Candles", "Beat Street", "The Freshest Kids", and are some of the noteworthy feature films they appeared in as well a cameo in "Body Rock". The NYCBs appeared on the first ever Hip Hop TV show called "Graffiti Rock", created, produced and hosted by their manager, Michael Holman. And author of the book "Breaking and The New York City Breakers", that was to be published that fall in 1984 by Freundlich Books. He was America's leading exponent in Hip Hop Culture and a founding member of Hip Hop International Inc.And released a Album Break-Master Featuring New York City Breakers that went Gold with Posters and array of how to break steps and how hold a competition the first to have all this in one album. The NYCBs were the first ever Hip Hop group and/or artists to perform in Washington D.C for a sitting President, specifically Ronald Reagan, during the 1984, "Kennedy Center Honors."" The performance was broadcast nationally on CBS, and is considered a landmark for the acceptance of Hip Hop culture in America. While performing in tribute to legendary choreographer, and Kenndy Center Honoree Katherine Dunham at the Kennedy Center Honors, the NYCBs befriended Frank Sinatra, (also an Honoree that year) who was so impressed by the NYCBs, he hired them back to perform for the 50th Presidential Inaugural Gala, which Sinatra was the organizing Chairman. Michael Holman and The New York City Breakers formed the first company Hip Hop International toured the world and performed for Presidents and royalty (England's Price Andrew and the King and Queen of Norway). As one of the first Hip Hop/B-Boy crews, they helped spread Hip Hop around the globe, and will always be remembered as crucial pioneers of Hip Hop Culture. At the height of The NYCBs fame, sadly, Matthew Caban (Glide Master) died in a motorcycle accident (from WIKI).

REVIEW OF @DJDOOWOP 'S LIVE MIXTAPE EUROPEAN TOUR JAZZ CAFE PERFORMANCE (VIDEO)

London has seen its fair share of performances from golden-era artists in recent months, with this particular event being one of the most anticipated, promising appearances from not one, but two iconic emcees backed-up by one of the greatest mixtape deejays of all-time.
Between them, Brand Nubian’s Sadat X and former Gang Starr Foundation member Jeru The Damaja share a hefty catalogue of classics, all of which have aged well and still stand as musical monuments to the lyrical brilliance and sonic creativity that the best of 90s Hip-Hop had to offer.
After the Bounce Master himself DJ Doo Wop had warmed the crowd up with a selection of real rap staples, a lively Sadat X bounded onstage to the sound of the Brand Nubian favourite “Punks Jump Up To Get Beat Down”, leading the crowd as they chanted the hook in unison before launching into the timeless “All For One”.
Pausing to remind everyone that he reps “New York City, Brand Nubian, D.I.T.C. and Lo-Lifes”, the emcee with one of the most recognisable voices in Hip-Hop proceeded to drop his verse from the late-90s Rawkus banger “1-9-9-9″ and also delivered a rousing rendition of his “Ready To Die”-era collaboration with Biggie Smalls, “Come On Motherf**kers”, with Sadat reminiscing on the time he spent in the studio writing the track with the BK giant as they both got drunk on champagne.
Promising to return later, X left the stage, leaving the audience in the capable hands of Doo Wop once again. Dropping some rhymes of his own, the Bounce Squad leader took the opportunity to dedicate the segment to his fallen friend Guru (complete with a “F**k Solar!” moment), going back-to-back on the turntables with some Gang Starr classics, including “Take It Personal”, which was Jeru’s signal to make his first appearance.
Reciting Guru’s rhymes in his own inimitable Brooklyn baritone, the NY emcee, decked in jeans, hoodie and Timberlands, smiled widely as he was greeted with roars of approval. Working his way through a number of DJ Premier-produced cuts, including “D. Original” and “Tha Bulls**t”, the gritty wordsmith mixed some humour into his performance, engaging in light-hearted exchanges with various audience members and playfully chastising the crowd for apparently not making enough noise.
Something that was apparent from looking around the venue was the number of younger heads in attendance, some of whom looked like they would barely have been born when both Sadat and Jeru were first making their respective marks on the Hip-Hop landscape. Encouragingly, the majority of the more youthful faces around the Jazz Cafe definitely didn’t appear to be fairweather fans, rhyming along word-for-word to twenty-year-old joints as if they were the soundtrack of the present day. A situation which can only be viewed as a positive thing as, judging from the lack of old-school heads at this and other recent gigs, it will be those younger fans who keep artists such as Sadat and Jeru touring for years to come, as long as their interest in classic Hip-Hop isn’t just a passing phase based on the music’s potential retro-cool appeal.
With Sadat and Jeru each performing a second individual set, which included anthems such as “Love Me Or Leave Me Alone” and “Come Clean”, the show closed with an impromptu freestyle session. As Jeru stepped behind the turntables to spin some familiar breaks, Sadat and Doo Wop invited any emcees in the house to approach the stage, with UK talent such as Oliver Sudden and Chima Anya taking the opportunity to rock with the three Rotten Apple representatives.
Ending a seamless night of classic material by mingling with fans to graciously sign autographs and take photos, Sadat, Jeru and Doo Wop left having ensured those older fans in the crowd were able to relive some of their Hip-Hop memories, whilst helping the younger heads in the audience create some new ones of their own.

Once Upon A Time in New York: The Birth of Hip Hop, Disco and Punk (Documentary)

How the squalid streets of '70s New York gave birth to music that would go on to conquer the world - punk, disco and hip hop. In the 1970s the Big Apple was rotten to the core, yet out of the grime, grit and low rent space emerged new music unlike anything that had gone before. Inspired by the Velvet Underground, a new wave of 'punk' rock emerged in lower Manhattan including The New York Dolls, The Ramones and the Patti Smith Group. Meanwhile, downtown loft parties held by gay New Yorkers heralded the birth of disco, which would eventually spawn the ultimate club for the privileged few: Studio 54. The swanky mid-town discos were out of bounds to black New York so in the Bronx DJs such as Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash and Afrika Bambaataa created their own parties, heralding the birth of hip hop. With David Johansen, Patti Smith, John Cale, Richard Hell, Grandmaster Flash, Afrika Bambaataa, Kool Herc, Nile Rodgers, Chuck D, Tommy Ramone, Chris Stein, Fab 5. Freddy, Lenny Kaye, Tina Weymouth, Chris Frantz, Syl Sylvain, Nicky Siano, David Mancuso, DJ AJ, David Depino, Jayne County, Leee Childers, Nelson George, Victor Bokris and Vince Aletti.

DJ JAZZY JAY LIVE IN COLUMBIA @ FIESTA OFFICIAL 10/19/12

Harlem World: Dapper Dan (VIDEO)

With his eponymous store on 125th Street in Harlem, Dapper Dan pioneered streetwear in the early 1980s by co-opting luxury branding from the likes of Louis Vuitton and MCM and designing original menswear with high-end detail—including exquisite leathers, furs, and skins. First drawing neighborhood hustlers and friends, Dan eventually outfitted rappers and other celebs of the time, such as Eric B & Rakim and Mike Tyson, to name a few. Now, nearly thirty years after entering the clothing game, Dan is plotting his return to the public eye. The reclusive designer recently sat down with Life +Times to discuss his career—alongside childhood friend Pee Wee Kirkland—retracing Harlem history in the process. SAMPLE THIS Official Movie Trailer (2012)

SAMPLE THIS is the true story of how an unknown music producer and the greatest studio musicians of the 70's entwined to create one of the most influential albums in history. If not for the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy, it might never have happened. The gunshots that rang out in the Ambassador Hotel kitchen in June of 1968 started a music revolution. It's the story of a band that never was, a cult movie and revolutionary music from the streets of New York. A pop culture odyssey that includes Charles Manson, a former Beatle and an infamous mobster. SAMPLE THIS is narrated by Gene Simmons and directed by Dan Forrer.

BBC Radio 1Xtra's Stories - Gone Too Soon : The Story of Guru (AUDIO)

Listen  to this incredible audio-mentary here:

Keith Edward Elam was known to the world as Guru - Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal. He made his name as one half of the legendary hip-hop duo Gang Starr and went on to reinvent the genre by fusing jazz with hip-hop in his widely acclaimed Jazzmatazz project.
But this dazzling musical success is just part of his story...a story that ended in tragedy and controversy.
In a unique programme, BBC Radio 1Xtra exclusively hears from Guru's family, his Gang Starr partner DJ Premier, the stars who worked with him, and Solar, his last business partner, who would be at the centre of the claims and counter-claims surrounding the rapper's untimely death.
The story starts in Boston and Guru's father, brother and sister help tell of his growing up there as the son of a judge. Original Gang Starr member Big Shug explains how he taught this well-educated, middle-class kid to rap and of Guru's move down the coast to the birthplace of hip-hop, New York.
It was in New York that Guru would join forces with DJ Premier to form the now celebrated final line up of Gang Starr. Side-by-side for almost 15 years and six albums, together they pioneered jazz sampling hip-hop, working with Jeru the Damaja, Snoop Dogg, Nice'n'Smooth, Jadakiss, MOP, Big L and Inspectah Deck of Wu Tang. Later Guru's solo project, the Jazzmatazz series, brought together jazz musicians and rappers including Donald Byrd, Herbie Hancock, Roy Ayers, Erykah Badu, The Roots, Common, Kool Keith, Angie Stone and Slum Village.
DJ Premier, rapper Common and Radio 1 and 1Xtra's Trevor Nelson will all talk about working with Guru, giving listeners an insight into his rhymes, the music, the man and his character. Radio 1Xtra's DJ Semtex and Benji B will study Guru's lyrics, style and delivery, looking back at when they first encountered Gang Starr, the group's early impact on hip-hop, and how Guru's Jazzmatazz series would cement his place as a musical innovator.
It was while moving back and forth between Gang Starr and Jazzmatazz projects that Guru would first meet the producer Solar. Although Gang Starr never officially split, Guru announced his next musical project would see him work with Solar and they went on set up their own label. It is from this point that The Story of Guru becomes disputed.
In this programme we'll explore how DJ Premier and members of his family began to feel distanced from Guru, struggling to maintain communication with him. Even so, Guru was busy with Solar, making music and playing live. But when Guru was diagnosed with cancer, the real problems started.
While Guru lay in hospital his family claimed that Solar banned them and long-term friend DJ Premier from visiting him. Guru's nephew posted a very public video on YouTube entitled "Guru. The True Story behind hospital and coma" in which he asked people to help him and his family gain access to his uncle, referring to Solar as "manipulative." However, Solar says he was doing what Guru told him to and so it was Guru who chose who he wanted to visit him.
The situation peaked when Guru died on 19th April, 2010. Solar released a statement, which he says was written by Guru himself, which shocked family, friends and fans alike. Not only did it ask Solar's family to look after Guru's son, but it also requested his "ex-DJ" Premier to dissociate himself from Guru's name. Many believe this letter to have been penned by Solar himself, it caused outrage among many who knew Guru, and in this programme we'll hear both sides of the story.
Irrespective of the drama, or rights and wrongs of what happened in those final days, no one can dispute that Guru was an incredible artist. He left fans with ten albums to enjoy, including massive hits like 'Full Clip', 'Just To Get A Rep', 'Moment of Truth' and more.
This programme will celebrate the music Guru left behind and try to solve some of the mystery surrounding his untimely death.
