DJ Doo Wop Announces "Underground: The New 90's" Mixtape Series @HIPHOPDX

VIA : HIPHOPDX  http://www.hiphopdx.com/index/news/id.19172/title.dj-doo-wop-announces-underground-the-new-90s-mixtape-series

One of New York's greatest mixtape makers launches a new series to showcase the talented emcees often ignored by commercial radio.

Veteran New York mixtape deejay and producer DJ Doo Wop has announced his latest mixtape series. The Bounce Squad/Flip Squad All-Stars alum and collaborator with the likes of 50 Cent and Guru will release Underground: The New 90's in conjunction with TheSource.com and 238 Beats Entertainment.

"I worked with almost every rapper in the game, building solid relationships with them and could easily put together a mixtape with all mainstream artists” said DJ Doo Wop in a statement. “Instead, I’d rather give Hip Hop fans something fresh and new. Most importantly, I want to show them that there's more to Hip Hop than the same 10 songs they constantly hear on commercial radio hour after hour. I want to go back to when the deejay broke the artist. A&R's do not exist anymore so new fresh talent has to get noticed by either affiliation with an already established artist or he/she has to somehow move a million mixtapes on their own in order to attract the attention of the check writers at major labels. I could provide that platform simply because of my resume in the mixtape game. Thankfully, everything I put out automatically reaches millions via the internet because of the credibility I have established over the years by making classics such as 95 Live, The Diaz Brothers, The Bounce Squad series etc. It made sense to collaborate with The Source magazine on this project. The Source has always been instrumental in giving up and coming artists a chance to be seen and heard. They are still the 'Bible' of Hip Hop and  I am glad to have the opportunity to work with them.”
The series will feature the likes of Cormega, Sean Price, REKS, John Robinson and others. The first installment will release April 10, 2012.

ICE T ON THE OPRAH WINFREY SHOW 1990 (VIDEO)

Shouts to Mickey Bentson for posting this video on his FB. Classic footage during the height of the "Gangster Rap " battles of the  early 90's. Ice always stood up for the culture and held his ground even in the most hostile situations. Ice once told me that he found a pipe bomb underneath his limo during the whole Cop Killer controversy. Amazingly today Ice plays a detective on a major network and has successfully transcended from "gangster rapper" to mainstream actor. Much respect to Ice T.

CLASSIC FLICKS - JOE CONZO'S CLASSIC HIP HOP PICS

#DOTHEKNOWLEDGE

In an article published on October 4, 2005, The New York Times proclaimed photographer Joe Conzo Jr. as “The Man Who Took Hip-Hop's Baby Pictures.” The scope and magnitude of his visceral camera images had finally been acknowledged by American mainstream media. Born and raised in the Bronx, “Joey” acquired a flair for photography at the age of nine while attending the Agnes Russell School on the campus of
Columbia University; later, advancing those skills at the School of Visual Arts in New York. He grew up at the heels of his grandmother - a dynamic leader and passionate activist within the minority community of the South Bronx - the late Dr. Evelina Antonetty. His father, Joe Conzo Sr., was long-time confidant and
historian for the late “King of Latin Music” Tito Puente. Exposure to these “politically and culturally charged” worlds had a profound effect on how he viewed his environment through the lens of a camera.
However, Joe Conzo Jr. really came of age as a young man and as a photographer at a turbulent period in New York City’s urban decay. He was part of a generation that refused to be silenced by the choke of flame-engulfed South Bronx tenements and a disparaging educational system. Their defiant voices gave rise to a cultural movement known as Hip Hop. And at its early stage, Joey passionately embraced the role of photographer within the phenomenon.

Most of those images from the 70’s and 80’s caught on b/w film by Joey, have traveled in one form or another to parts of Asia, Europe, and the Americas. They are regarded by genre experts and academians as an important visual record of key pioneers to the modern Hip Hop movement, and integral to
any serious discourse on the subject. His first book “Born In The Bronx: A Visual Record of the Early Days of Hip Hop” (2007), a collaborative effort with noted New York musicologist and curator Johan Kugelberg, has received world-wide acclaim. In 2008, a collection of his early Hip Hop photographs
became part of a permanent archive housed at Cornell University. The images are located right next to its copy of The Gettysburg Address document. Like most modern photographers, Joey has undergone the transition to digital. His stills continue to reflect the four main tenets of Hip Hop culture
which are Mc'ing (often called rapping), DJ’ing, graffiti writing, and breakdancing. He has traveled throughout the USA on-assignment, as a lecturer, and as an exhibitor. He has crossed the oceans to England, Japan,
Korea and other parts of the world where the global impact of Hip Hop music, culture, and dancing has become undeniable. His images have appeared on HBO and VH1, in the motion picture film CB4 (starring Chris Rock), in publications such as VIBE, Complex, Hip-Hop Connection (Europe), Urban Hitz
(Australia), Esquire and Wax Poetics. His works also appear in the books “Hip Hop Immortals” (2003), “Yes, Yes, Y’all” (2002), and have been displayed at the prestigious Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in New York. Currently, Joey has a second book of photographs in progress, and a third in
the planning stage. In mid-January, he will be travelling to Amsterdam (The Netherlands) to give a presentation of his work.

M Rock - The Best Of Notorious B I G (AUDIO)

Shouts to Tapemasta for posting this today. Collectors item for sure.....

Tapemasta: I wondered whether M Rock was going to do a joint for Biggie..I asked & look what happen..It's good to be able to stay ahead of people with concepts..Enjoy this because it's for one of the greatest story tellers in hip hop...

M Rock: I’m pleased to drop this brand new Best of Biggie for all his fans. On top of that, I’m happy I made the march 9th death anniversary deadline. Long story short, I was working on another Valentine’s tape because the first was so well-received, and then Cabbie said I should really do a March 9th BIG tape. It made sense because it’s been long overdue and the timing. That was it, my RNB tape had to get pushed back.

I have nothing to say about him dying or being sad. It’s not like he was a positive person or had amazing messages. He knew how to make bangers and that matters a lot. With Biggie, I constantly notice the versatility – is he rnb or is he hardcore preemo hip-hop or pop or just on a real demo vibe? I can never decide because he keeps going somewhere different, after it sinks in that he murdered one style. The versatility is not just because of him – don’t forget the producers: The Hitmen, Easy Mo Bee, Puff, DJ Premier, in that order (not to compare Premier to anybody). I don’t know if Big was thinking of putting in D-Train’s lines for “Sky’s the Limit” but I found it interesting how heavily he was involved in the production. For example, he would suggest sampling R. Kelly for the Premier-produced “Unbelievable” or tell D-Dot (one of Kanye West‘s mentors) that he was planning on using “Ladi Dadi” for the hook in “Hypnotize”. Who’s doing that? Who’s 17 years old and freestyling with perfection on street corners in the daylight and getting a crowd? Nobody. I love artists who master their craft. How can you not? Thanks to my peoples for reminding me about tracks like “Think Big” that I never even knew. Take an hour and a half and let the funk sit in. Enjoy.
